Sun and shadow simulation for any Swiss address
hood shows any Swiss address as a 3D neighborhood and simulates where the sun stands and where shadows fall. The buildings are swisstopo swissBUILDINGS3D LoD2 models with their real roof shapes, placed on the swisstopo terrain.
Sun path and cast shadows
Pick a date and move the time slider, or press play to run through the day. The 3D sun follows the chosen date and time in Swiss local time, and roofs and walls cast shadows onto the terrain and onto neighboring buildings. A readout shows the sun's altitude and compass direction, plus sunrise and sunset for that day. After dark the view switches to a neutral light.
Building details
Click a building to open its panel: height, base, estimated floors and, where rooftop data exists, solar potential with annual PV yield, suitable area, mean irradiation and monthly production. Claire, the Aireon assistant, answers questions about the selected building, including sun and shade on its roof.
What else you can do
- View the site from north, east, south or west
- Recolor the buildings, change their opacity or show the underground volume
- Switch the building source between swisstopo and Aireon LiDAR (Frauenfeld pilot)
- Fly around the site with the Orbit or Plane camera, or tour your saved parcels
- Record a video, save an image or share a link to the selected building
Frequently asked questions
How much do neighboring buildings shade this property?
Search the address, pick a date and drag the time slider or press play. The 3D sun moves to each moment and the surrounding buildings cast their shadows onto the terrain and onto the property, so you can see at which times of day and in which season it lies in shade.
Is hood a certified daylight study?
No. hood simulates the sun path over modeled 3D buildings (swisstopo swissBUILDINGS3D LoD2) and terrain. It is a visual shadow analysis to understand a site, not a certified daylight study or a legally binding shading assessment.
Which data does hood use?
swisstopo swissBUILDINGS3D LoD2 buildings and terrain, streamed from geo.admin.ch, and rooftop solar potential from the Swiss Federal Office of Energy (BFE) solar roof layer. In Frauenfeld you can switch to Aireon LiDAR buildings, reconstructed from swissSURFACE3D.
